안녕하세요! 제 이름은 Dominic Phillips이고 2019년 여름에 NSLI-Y Korean Summer Program에 참여했어요. 고등학교 재학 중에 중국어 수업 들었었는데 NSLI-Y를 통해서 중국어가 아닌 새로운 언어를 배울 기회를 얻고 싶었어요. 제가 어렸을 때 태권도를 배웠고 한국은 현대적이고 편리한 나라라고 들어서 결국 한국어 프로그램을 신청했어요. 합격할 줄 몰랐지만 신청서하고 인터뷰를 열심히 했더니 4월 어느날에 NSLI-Y Korean Summer Program에서 합격 이메일이 온 거에요! 그때 정말 상상도 하지 못할 행복감이 들었어요. 하지만 문제가 있었어요.
Hello! My name is Dominic Phillips, and I participated in the NSLI-Y Korean Summer Program in 2019. In high school, I studied Chinese, but I wanted the chance to learn a completely different language through NSLI-Y. I had practiced Taekwondo as a kid, and I heard that Korea is a very modern and convenient country. For these reasons, I eventually chose to apply for Korean. I worked hard on my application and interview but did not genuinely believe I would be accepted. Still, one day in April, I received an e-mail saying I had been accepted into the NSLI-Y Korean Summer Program in Seoul. I was very happy then, but there was a problem.

하지만 문제가 있었어요. 바로 제가 한국어에 서툴렀다는 점이었죠. NSLI-Y 프로그램을 참가하기 전, 그러니까 한국에 도착하기 전에 NSLI-Y PPLP에서 꼭 필요한 단어 40개만 배웠었어요. 저는 전에 한글 배우는 것이 쉽다고 들었어서 나름대로 긴장을 하지는 않았었어요. 하지만 한국에 와서 프로그램에 참가하자마자 제가 충격을 받게 되었어요. Pre-Departure Orientation에서도 Resident Directors들이 대부분 한국어로만 말하셨고 저는 대부분의 이야기들을 이해하지 못했기 때문이에요. 한국에 도착한 후 제 언어 실력은 나아지지 않았어요. 어학당의 레벨 테스트 문제들을 하나도 풀지 못했거니와 프로그램 참가자 50명 중에 제가 한국어를 잘 못하는 사람이라고 생각했었고 사람들에게 자주 도움을 받았어요. 솔직히 말하면 한국어 프로그램을 선택한 것이 많이 후회가 됐던건 사실이에요.
The problem was that I was an absolute beginner. Before NSLI-Y, I had absolutely no experience with learning Korean. Because I heard learning to read Hangeul was easy, I didn’t worry at first. I didn’t study Korean outside of the PPLP (Pre-Program Language Preparation), so I knew maybe 40 words and had no concept of grammar. As a result, I was shocked as soon as the program started. Even at the Pre-Departure Orientation, the Resident Directors spoke mostly in Korean, so there was a lot I did not understand. The situation did not improve when I landed in Korea. I couldn’t solve a single question at the language center’s placement test. Of the 50 people in my cohort, I thought I was the weakest at Korean, and I always relied on other people for help. To be honest, at that time, I genuinely regretted choosing the Korean program.
제가 경험했던 것과 같이 미리 언어 배우는 경험이 없었다면 프로그램을 참가하는 동안 제가 경험했던 일들이 생길 수 있다고 생각해요. 새로운 언어를 배울 때 ‘나는 완전 초보자인데 어떡하지?’ 라는 생각이 드실 수도 있어요. 하지만 저는 NSLI-Y 프로그램은 배우고자 했던 언어에 이미 능통한 사람들을 위한 프로그램이 아닌 새로운 언어를 배우고자 하는 사람들을 위한 프로그램이라고 강조하고 싶어요. 이 프로그램에 합격했다는 사실 자체가 당신이 어려움을 극복할 수 있다는 능력을 알아봤다는 것과 같으니까요. 시간이 지날수록 도움이 필요할 때 받는 것이 오히려 현명한 것이라고 생각되었고, 이 과정에서 저는 한국 사람들의 친절함을 느끼게 되었어요. 일례로, 제가 버스에서 길을 잃은 것처럼 보이면 주변 분들이 “어디 가는지 알아요?” “도움이 필요해요?”라고 먼저 물어봐주시면서 도와주셨었어요. 이 프로그램에 참여하면서 경험이 많은 NSLI-Y 동기들도 항상 저를 도와줬던 기억이 나요. 친구들은 제가 단어나 한국식 표현을 알고 싶어할 때 언제든지 저를 알려주고 싶어했던 것 같아요. 저는 저의 홈스테이 가족과도 완전 잘 어울렸어요. 아버지, 어머니, 남동생은 다 영어 잘 해서 소통이 됐는데 때때로 저랑 한국어로만 말을 했었어요. 저는 오히려 이때 저의 한국어 실력이 늘어났다고 생각해요. 홈스테이 가족들의 영어 실력은 다를 수 있는데, 그들은 당신을 원했기 때문에, 그리고 그들에게도 이것은 하나의 도전이라고 볼 수 있었기에 홈스테이를 한 것이라고 생각해요. 저는 언어를 미리 공부한 경험 없이 NSLI-Y에 참여하는 것이 참 대단한 것이고, 이것이 참여자의 용기를 반영한다고 생각합니다. 가끔씩 이 말이 당신에게 도움이 되었으면 좋겠어요!
If you have no prior experience, this kind of situation can easily occur during the program, So if you’re an absolute beginner, what should you do? The most important thing is that NSLI-Y is not a program for people who already know all of the target language; it is a language learning program. If you were accepted, it was because the US government believes you can overcome this kind of challenge. During the program, I came to realize that receiving help when you need it is not a bad thing, and that it is a reflection of the kindness of the Korean people. For example, when I rode the bus, I would sometimes look lost, and as a result older men and women would often ask “Do you know where you’re going?” “Do you need help?” ALso, my NSLI-Y peers with more experience always helped. Whenever I didn’t know a word or phrase, they would always be willing to teach me. Furthermore, my host family and I were a great match. My mother, father, and younger brother all spoke English well, but would occasionally only speak Korean to allow me to grow through challenges. The English ability of your host family may vary, but they all agreed to host an exchange student because they wanted to and believed they are up to the challenge. In my opinion, participating in NSLI-Y without prior experience is truly impressive. It's a reflection of your courage. I hope that remembering these things help.

프로그램이 약 6주 동안 진행되는데, 이 6주는 생각보다 짧은 시간라고 생각되지 않으세요? 저한테는 이 6주가 굉장히 짧게 느껴졌었어요. 한국어를 이해할 수 있을 정도가 되자마자 미국으로 돌아가야 됐고 새로 만든 친구와 가족에게 작별 인사를 해야 해서 너무 속상하고 아쉬웠었어요. 신기했던 것은, 미국에 돌아오고 나서도 저는 저의 한국어 여정은 끝나지 않았다고 생각됐던 것이었어요. 대학교 입시를 준비하고 있던 어느 날 NSLI-Y 프로그램 생각이 많이 났었어요. 친구들이랑 연세대학교 방문했던 기억을 생생하게 떠올릴 수 있었고 여기를 입학하고 싶었어요. 저는 약간의 탐색 끝에 결국 연세대학교의 학부대학이자 영어로 모든 강의를 진행하는 언더우드국제대학을 발견했고, 지원을 하여 입학하게 되었어요. 이미 NSLI-Y에 참여했던 경험이 있어서 한국에서 4년동안 대학생으로 살 수 있는 자신감 있었어요. 돌이켜 생각해보면 NSLI-Y 프로그램이 명문 해외 대학교에 신청할 수 있는 기회를 저에게 줬던 것 같아요. 입학하고 나서 매일 한국어로 말하는 기회가 생겼고 글로벌한 친구들을 사귈 수 있어서 인간으로서 저는 더욱 성장할 수 있었어요. 이제는 외국인 친구들이 도움이 필요할 때 통역을 해 줄 수 있을 정도에요! 요즘에는 제가 다른 친구들에게 도움이 줄 때 항상 제가 도움이 받는 모습 기억나서 더 도와주고 싶은 마음이 들어요. 최근 겨울 방학동안 저소득층 초등학생들에게 영어를 가르쳤었어요. 어린 친구들의 한국어를 이해하는 것이 저에게는 조금 어려웠지만 제가 가르치는 것 자체가 저에게는 영광이었고, 이를 통해서 저는 한 번 더 성장할 수 있었던 것 같아요.
By the way, 6 weeks is a short amount of time right? It seems like as soon as I started understanding Korean I had to return to America and say goodbye to my new friends and family. Very frustrating. However, even though I returned to America I had the feeling that my journey with Korean was not over. As I was applying to colleges, memories of a particular day during NSLI-Y came to mind. I suddenly remembered visiting Yonsei University with some friends, and after a little bit more searching, I discovered Underwood International College. Because I had already done NSLI-Y, I had the confidence that I could live in Korea as a college student. Without NSLI-Y, I may not have applied to the prestigious and overseas colleges that I did. Since entering college, I have had the opportunity to speak Korean every day and make friends with an international group of students, which has allowed me to truly grow as a person. Now, whenever fellow foreign students need help, I can provide that. Every time I'm able to assist someone, I am reminded of all the help I received when I was a complete beginner during the program. Recently during the winter break, I got a job teaching English to low income elementary school kids. Helping to improve these kids' English was a great honor, as well as another difficult yet rewarding challenge trying to understand their Korean. Once again, the NSLI-Y spirit of growing as a language learner and as a person through adversity and challenge lives on in me.

솔직히 말해서 NSLI-Y Summer는 짧은 시간이었고 한국어를 개괄적으로만 배웠던 것 같아요. 하지만 저에게 있어서 이 프로그램은 언어를 배우는 기회를 준 것일 뿐만이 아니라 다른 관점에서 세상을 바라보게 한 의미있는 프로그램이었어요. 배우고 싶은 언어의 사람들 사이에서 그들과 교류하며 사는 것이 언어를 배우는 가장 좋은 방법이라고 생각해요. 설사 끝에 나의 언어 실력이 늘지 않았다고 생각될지라도 언어 수업을 듣는 것보다 더 많은 것을 배우고, 상상한 것 그 이상의 미래지향적 기회를 열어줄 경험을 할 수 있었다는 것을 기억했으면 좋겠어요!
NSLI-Y Summer is a short time and honestly, I only learned a little Korean in the grand scheme of things. But to me, the meaning of NSLI-Y is not just learning languages but to change your perspective. Immersion certainly is the best atmosphere to learn a language, but in the end, even if you don’t improve as much as you’d like, keep in mind that you’ve gone through much more than a language class. You’ve completed a rare experience that will open up more opportunities for the future than you can imagine.
