Every month the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs selects an outstanding exchange participant as the American Abroad Student of the Month. NSLI-Y is proud to highlight the accomplishments of Melita, who was selected as the American Abroad Student of the Month in January 2016.

Originally from Knoxville, TN, Melita is currently studying Mandarin Chinese in Changzhou, China. In addition to making rapid progress in learning Chinese, she has also been actively participating in extracurricular and cultural immersion opportunities. She used her Mandarin skills to participate in two interviews with local news outlets. She was selected to participate in a leadership conference in Nanjing. The conference was held entirely in Chinese and was a great opportunity for Melita to see how much her listening and speaking skills had improved. Melita also participates in Glee Club to share her love of performing arts.

Well done, Melita!
