Every month the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs selects an outstanding exchange participant as the American Abroad Student of the Month. NSLI-Y is proud to highlight the accomplishments of Greta, who was selected as the American Abroad Student of the Month in March 2018.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Greta is currently studying Mandarin Chinese in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Throughout this year, she has found ways to increase her language proficiency by pursuing two things she is passionate about, volunteering and STEM! Through a volunteering club at Wenzao University, Greta has spent at least three hours a week tutoring local elementary school students. She also earned an honorable mention at a national speech competition for exchange students in Taipei for her speech, about the importance of not judging others by one encounter. Greta has also found ways to pursue her passion for STEM while abroad. To prepare for her final research project on STEM education in Taiwan, she visited a local elementary school to interview a math teacher and discuss how elementary school education can influence a student’s interest in robotics and coding.

Congratulations, Greta!
