The first day of Korean class was almost here. Most students were excited because Korean classes were going to start, but I was very worried. In reality, I did not previously learn Korean through classes or self-study. Because I had learned Korean by conversing with my Korean parents, I did not formally learn basic grammar. Therefore, I thought that I would not be able to follow along with the class. Will my Korean really improve? What will my classmates or teachers think? While I was worried about this and that, I still wanted to improve my Korean language skills.
한국어 수업의 첫날이 거의 다가왔다. 대부분의 사람은 수업이 시작돼서 신났지만 나는 고민이 많았다. 사실 수업이나 독학을 통해서 한국어를 배우지 않았다. 한국 부모님들과 집에서 같이 대화하면서 배웠기 때문에 한국어의 기본 문법을 제대로 배우지 않았다. 그래서 수업에 잘못 따라갈 거라고 생각하였다. 정말로 한국어가 향상될 수 있을까? 수업에 같이 있는 학생들이나 선생님들이 무엇을 생각할까? 이것저것을 고민하면서 한국어 실력을 계속 늘리고 싶은 마음이 들었다.
드디어 한국어 수업의 첫날이 왔다. 그날부터 이화여자대학교에 6주 동안 매일 4시간씩 한국어 수업을 들을 예정이었다. 미국에서 온 유학생들 모두가 이화여대에 도착하고 나서 학생들이 반별로 나누어졌다. 나와 다른 미국 유학생 6명과 선생님 2명이 은하수반에 함께 하게 되었다. 은하수반 이름을 듣자마자 ‘우아, 특이한 이름이네’라고 생각하였다. 시간이 지날수록 그 은하수의 이름은 한국어 수업의 경험의 특이함을 표현하게 되었다. 정말로 인생을 바꿀 만한 경험이었다.
At last, the first day of Korean class had come. From that day, we had four-hour Korean classes every day for six weeks scheduled at Ewha Woman’s University. After all the exchange students from America arrived at Ewha Woman’s University, the students were divided into their separate classes. I, along with six other American exchange students and two Korean teachers, was going to be in the Galaxy Class. As soon as I heard our class name of Galaxy Class, I thought “Wow, that’s a unique name.” As time went by, that Galaxy Class name came to express the unique experiences of our Korean class. It really turned into a life-changing experience.
지나고 보니 니슬리에서 은하수반의 수업 시간이 제일 그립다. 우리 반 친구 7명은 서로를 도와 가며 한국어 공부를 많이 하였다. 예를 들면 누가 모르는 단어나 문법을 잘못 이해했으면 다들 그 학생에게 자세히 설명해 주었고 다음에는 똑같은 실수를 하지 않도록 조언해 주었다. 최영현 선생님과 최유미 선생님도 우리에게 도움이 많이 되는 제안을 해주셨다. 이렇게 서로를 늘 꼼꼼하게 돕고 응원하는 모습에 감동 많이 받았고 예전에 갖고 있었던 고민이 점점 사라졌다. 한국어와 한국 문화의 열정이 넘치는 은하수반의 7명은 한국어 능력을 늘었을 뿐만 아니라 잊지 못할 추억을 많이 만들었다. 미리가 웃긴 얼굴 표정을 만들거나 야야가 농담을 재미있게 하거나 슈레야가 지혜로운 말을 해서 기분 전환이 되는 순간들이 많았다. 그리고 정말로 천사같이 착한 엘리와 춤을 멋지게 칠 수 있는 미셸과 엄청나게 똑똑한 마이카도 기억이 난다. 이런 순간들을 통해서 정말로 친한 친구들이 되었다. 6주 동안 같은 은하수반 친구들에게 마음을 열 수가 있었고 반 친구들 덕분에 한국어를 더 잘 이해해갈 수 있었다. 우리 반은 정말로 재밌고 유익한 반이었다.
In hindsight, I miss our Galaxy Class class the most from NSLI-Y. All seven of us studied a lot of Korean while continuing to helping each other. For example, if anyone did not understand an unfamiliar word or grammar point, everyone tried to explain in detail to that student and gave them advice on how to not make the same mistake again. In addition, Ms. Young-hyun Choi and Ms. Yu-mi Choi made very helpful suggestions to us. In this way, I was touched by how everyone constantly and carefully helped and supported each other. Therefore, the fears I had previously gradually disappeared. Not only did the seven of us, who were overflowing with passion for the Korean language and culture, improve our Korean proficiency, but we also made a lot of unforgettable memories. From Mili’s hilarious facial expressions to Yaayaa’s funny jokes to Shreya’s wise words, there were lots of moments that put us in a good mood. In addition, I also remember Ellie’s angel-like kindness, Michelle’s amazing dancing skills, and Maika’s grand intelligence. It was through these moments when we became really good friends. I was able to open up to my fellow Galaxy Class classmates for six weeks and thanks to my classmates, I was able to better understand the Korean language. We were a really fun and helpful class.
내 인생에서 니슬리의 한국어 수업은 많은 도전과 도움이 되었다. 마지막 수업이 왔을 때 눈물이 줄줄 흘렀다. 또 만날 기회가 있을지도 모르고 다 같이 한국어를 배울 수 있을지도 모른다는 마음에 슬펐다. 은하수반의 7명은 울면서 마지막 인사를 하고 각자 집으로 돌아갔다. 미국에 돌아 와서도 서로 연락을 하며 좋은 관계를 맺고 있었다. 미국에 와서도 한국어를 열심히 공부하는 열정직인 모습에 감동 많이 받았다. 마지막으로 훌륭한 은하수반 친구들 미리, 야야, 슈레야, 엘리, 미셸, 마이카와 친절하게 가르쳐 주신 최영현 선생님과 최유미 선생님께 늘 감사한 말씀을 드리고 싶다. 정말로 우리는 함께 은하수에 닿은 것 같다.
My NSLI-Y Korean class became a great challenge and help in my life. When the time for the last class came, tears were streaming down my face. I was sad that there might not be another opportunity for us to meet or learn Korean together again. After the seven students of the Galaxy Class said our last goodbyes to one another crying, we all returned to our own respective homes. Even after coming back to America, I was touched by the passionate images of my classmates continuing to diligently study Korean. Finally, I want to always express my gratitude to my superb Galaxy Class friends, Mili, Yaayaa, Shreya, Ellie, Michelle, Maika, and to my Korean teachers, Ms. Young-hyun Choi and Ms. Yu-mi Choi for teaching us so kindly; it really does seem like together we have reached the galaxy.
