My 2018 Arabic NSLI-Y experience in Rabat, Morocco was life-changing. It was such a rewarding experience that I decided to return for my studies through the Boren Scholarship from 2022-2023. I had a lot of growth to reflect upon between these two experiences. I was a recent high-school graduate when I completed NSLI-Y and a soon-to-be college graduate after my Boren experience. NSLI-Y was an opportunity to immerse and re-discover myself by exploring a new place, meeting new people, pushing boundaries, and embracing change.

NSLI-Y directly impacted my course of study, community work, and career path. Studying Arabic in Rabat in 2018 gave me the confidence, skills, and desire to major in International Studies and minor in Arabic and Community Service Studies at DePaul University in Chicago.

Prior to my NSLI-Y experience, community involvement through volunteering and outreach was important to me. It was through one of my high school volunteer experiences assisting adult ELL (English Language Learner) students that I was first inspired to learn Arabic and apply for NSLI-Y. I am so grateful NSLI-Y incorporated volunteering into our summer program. To serve our new community abroad, we prepared and served meals to the elderly, painted a school, and played with children. At DePaul University, I was selected as a Community Service Scholar and dedicated my undergraduate studies to service learning, activism, and community partnerships. I was able to utilize my language skills by being an active volunteer with the Middle Eastern Immigrant and Refugee Alliance (MIRA).

My NSLI-Y experience inspired me to pursue other governmental study abroad opportunities. I was awarded the 2019 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) in Amman, Jordan. In early 2023, I returned from seven months of study in Rabat with the Boren Scholarship.

My career path has also been greatly influenced by my NSLI-Y experience. My first full-time job was Intake Coordinator for the Syrian Community Network. I have a dedicated passion for serving immigrant and refugee populations and enhancing access to public benefits and social services. I left this position to travel to Rabat to complete my Boren Scholarship studies. Upon my return to the U.S. from my studies abroad, I was offered a position at SCN and began working as a Case Manager.

Even as a college graduate, I continue to grow through the NSLI-Y network and alumni opportunities. In February of 2023, I attended a NSLI-Y Leadership Alumni Workshop in Washington D.C. where I connected with NSLI-Y alumni from several language programs. We benefited greatly from leadership training and workshops with speakers and officials from the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational Affairs.

I attribute my love for the Arabic language and cultural immersion to NSLI-Y and am happy to share my experience with others. This past December I was interviewed as a panelist in Rabat for a Cultural Center’s Celebration of World Arabic Day to share my study of the language. I encourage every young person looking for self-discovery, personal growth, and new perspectives to apply for NSLI-Y. I am always available to speak with prospective applicants of the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), and the Boren Scholarship.

تجربتي مع NSLI-Y في الرباط المغرب غيرت حياتي سنة 2018. لقد كانت تجربة مجزية قررت العودة إلى الرباط لدراستي من خلال منحة بورين من 2022-2023. لقد أنجزت الكثير من النمو الشخصي منذ أن أنهيت البرنامجين.. تخرجت من المدرسة الثانوية عندما أكملت NSLI-Y وتخرجت قريبًا من الكلية بعد تجربتي مع منحة بورين. كانت NSLI-Y فرصة للانغماس اللغوي و الاكتشاف الذاتي من خلال العيش في مدينة جديدة وبلد جديد ، والتعرف على أشخاص جدد ، ودفع الحدود الشخصية ، و تبني التغيير.

ألهمتني فرصة NSLI-Y للاستمرار في البحث عن فرص الدراسة العربية في بلدان عربية. في عام 2019 حصلت على منحة أخرى تسمى ب(CLS) في عمان الأردن. وكما ذكرت في بداية النص، عدت من سبعة أشهر من الدراسة اللغة العربية في الرباط بمنحة تسمى ب"بورين."

NSLI-Y أثرت على المسار الوظيفي بشكل كبير أيضًا. كانت وظيفتي الأولى مع مكتب الجالية السورية كمنسق الاستيعاب.أنا متحمسة لخدمة المهاجرين واللاجئين وتعزيز الوصول إلى المنافع العامة والخدمات الاجتماعية. تركت وظيفتي للسفر إلى الرباط لدراستي مع منحة بورين. لحسن الحظ ، بعد عدت إلى شيكاغو ووجدت فرصة لشغل كمديرة الحالة وأعمل فيه حاليًا.

حتى الآن، أنا كخريجة كلية استمر في النمو من خلال شبكة NSLI-Y وفرص الخريجين. في فبراير سنة 2023 حضرت أنشطة التواصل الشبكي بين خريجي NSLI-Y في واشنطن عاصمة امريكا. في نفس الوقت حضرنا أنشطة للمبادرات قيادة وورش مع مسؤولين من مكتب الشؤون التعليمية بوزارة الخارجية.

كما أنني أهدي هذا الحب للغة العربية والانغماس الثقافي إلى NSLI-Y وأنا سعيدة للغاية للفرصة لأتكلم عن تجربتي مع الآخرين. في ديسمبر 2022، أجريت مقابلة في الرباط في احتفال المركز الثقافي باليوم العالمي للغة العربية وشاركت قصص من دراستي للغة. أشجع كل شاب في البحث عن فرص لاكتشاف الذاتي والنمو الشخصي ووجهات نظر جديدة للتقدم بطلب للحصول على منحة NSLI-Y. أنا دائمًا موجودة للتحدث مع المتقدمين المحتملين (NSLI-Y) ومنحة (CLS) ومنحة بورين.
