Fifteen years ago, I took a leap with NSLI-Y, landing in Russia with no idea how to speak the language or understand the culture. From day one, I had to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, relying on curiosity and a lot of trial and error. Through those daily efforts, I found a confidence I didn’t know I had, realizing that, with persistence, I could figure almost anything out. People often focus on the language skills you gain through NSLI-Y, but what gets overlooked are the soft skills you pick up—things like resilience, adaptability, and the ability to connect across cultures. For me, these have turned out to be the most valuable parts of the experience.

Fast forward to today, and I’m in a career that is overwhelmingly male and older than me by a good stretch. This setting could feel intimidating, but the confidence I built during NSLI-Y—learning how to thrive in a completely new environment—has been a game-changer. Compared to landing in a foreign country with no foundation, learning to navigate a new industry feels like a (relative) breeze. NSLI-Y taught me how to observe, adapt, and trust that I could hold my own, even in unfamiliar spaces.

Looking back, I can say that NSLI-Y didn’t just teach me Russian; it gave me a lasting foundation of skills I never knew I’d need. Today, those early lessons help me take on challenging roles, voice my ideas, and connect with people from all walks of life. For anyone considering this journey, know that the impact doesn’t fade when you come home. It’s a program that leaves a mark, giving you tools that will keep opening doors long after your return.
